Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving first started when the pilgrims invited local  Native Americans to share a meal with them. Something new I found out was that Thanksgiving didn’t become an annual holiday until 200 years after that first meal. That first meal was a 3 day festival celebrating the pilgrims first successful harvest. Pilgrims killed 5 deer a presents for the colonists. Another interesting fact I learned was that there was no turkey or potatoes present in the first meal. The celebration was not repeated until years later. Our president at the time ,George Washington, announced the first ever Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday November 26th, 1789. However Thanksgiving did not become a National Holiday until the 19th century. Sara Josepha Hale started a 30 year position to make Thanksgiving a National Holiday. She also published recipes for pumpkin pie, stuffing, mashed potatoes, turkey, and cranberry sauce. President Abraham Lincoln announced during the Civil War that Thanksgiving would be celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November. It was George H.W Bush who stated that there would be a pardon turkey every November.
